'Share the Knowledge' about osteoporosis with Synexus

Osteoporosis

Monday 20th October is World Osteoporosis Day and marks the launch of the Synexus Share the Knowledge campaign. Osteoporosis affects as many as 3 million people in the UK, with one third of adult women likely to suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. The lifetime risk of an osteoporotic fracture is greater than the lifetime risk of cancer or cardiovascular disease for women; however, despite these startling statistics only a third of those at risk of osteoporosis are routinely being offered scans which can measure bone density.

As part of the 'Share the Knowledge' campaign Synexus is urging people to discuss osteoporosis with people they know who might be at risk from the disease. By encouraging friends and family members to consider their risk of osteoporosis it is estimated that between half and two-thirds of the fractures which typically result from osteoporosis could be prevented.

Synexus is also offering free DXA scans to women over the age of 65 at one of its seven centres between now and January 2009. The National Osteoporosis Society regards DXA scanning to be the 'most reliable and accurate means of assessing the strength of bones'.
